Elena Laurinavičiūtė and Roma Salė solo show “Low Frequency Memory” at Water Reservoir in Vilnius
Elena Laurinavičiūtė and Roma Salė are emerging voices in Lithuanian interdisciplinary art. In this exhibition, E. Laurinavičiūtė investigated the relationship between material and ephemeral elements—clay and sound—through her distinctive sound installations, whilst R. Salė light-wielding objects reflected the memory and historical layers of this unique space. Together, the artists explored a synthesis of sound, light, and space that evokes invisible states of transformation and a sense of instability.
The exhibition reflected on the collective memory embedded in the architecture of the Liepkalnis Water Reservoir, and examines how sound and light interact with the space to influence human perception. The site’s acoustic architecture became an integral component of the installation, with echoes forming a living body of sound. E. Laurinavičiūtė’s sound objects allowed to hear what is usually invisible—air currents, vibrations, and rhythmic motion—creating an active acoustic medium. In contrast, Salė’s precise manipulation of light revealed the spatial memory of the reservoir, pointing to changes in function and history of the building.
Through the synesthesia of rarely observed waves, the artists invited to experience subtle, often unnoticed states of change and to listen anew to the world where matter, time, and memory merge in invisible frequencies.
Elena Laurinavičiūtė (b. 1993) is a ceramic artist who earned her MA from the VDA (Vilnius Academy of Arts) in 2024. She actively participates in performances, solo, and group exhibitions in Lithuania and internationally. She completed an internship at EKA (Estonian Academy of Arts) and has been awarded scholarships from the Research Council of Lithuania and the Antanas Smetona Foundation.
The exhibition “Low Frequency Memory”, presented by the duo of Roma Salė and Elena Laurinavičiūtė, was a part of (AV17) Gallery project which aims to present young Lithuanian interdisciplinary female artists and their works in non-traditional spaces. Alongside this exhibition, Urte Janus’ show “Flowing Bodies” was presented in the underground water reservoir of Aukštaitijos Vandenys in Panevėžys, and in September, Roma Salė’s solo exhibition “Alternative Narratives”was opened in the postern of The Fourth Fort in Kaunas.
The (AV17) Gallery has been actively working in the field of contemporary art for fourteen years. It is one of the few galleries in Lithuania that focuses exclusively on sculpture and installation art. In addition to its regular exhibition program, the gallery initiates international and regional artistic and educational projects and runs exchange programs with both Lithuanian and foreign artists, thus promoting the dissemination of contemporary art in Lithuania and Europe.
The exhibition “Low Frequency Memory” was on view until September 19th at Liepkalnis Water Reservoir, Liepkalnio str. 20, Vilnius.
The project was funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
