Arturas Bumšteinas, Elena Laurinavičiūtė, Alessandro Perini
On October 22 at 6 pm, (AV17) Gallery will open the group exhibition “Acoustic Density”, presenting works by three artists – Arturas Bumšteinas, Elena Laurinavičiūtė and Alessandro Perini – who explore the relationships between sound, physical form and movement.
The exhibition is part of “Laconica”, an ongoing project by Pamėnkalnio Gallery. This year, the project focuses on sound as a form of minimalist artistic expression, connecting music, visual art and interdisciplinary practices. Minimalism is reflected in the close connection between form and concept, the use of limited means and attention to the essential aspects of the subject.
Through a range of artistic approaches, the artists explore the potential of acoustics beyond conventional ways of listening. Vinyl records, ceramic objects and electromechanical systems reveal the relationship between the source of sound, its physical form and the viewer’s experience. Each artist approaches the question of how something ephemeral by nature can be experienced in a different way. In “Acoustic Density”, sound is not simply heard – it is embodied, materialised, set in motion and observed. The interaction between materials and acoustics in the exhibition space highlights sound as an independent form of artistic expression that can change our perception of space and broaden our listening experience.
Composer and sound artist Arturas Bumšteinas, who works with experimental music and sound installations, presents his original vinyl record casts, transforming previously heard sound into physical objects. This work builds on the exploration of sound in “Goldberg Variations”, an exhibition presented at (AV17) Gallery in 2020 together with Gitis Bertulis. Rather than remaining a fleeting acoustic event, sound becomes a lasting artefact – a material trace that preserves what was once heard.
Elena Laurinavičiūtė presents ceramic works that produce sound, alongside aerophone instruments. In her work, sound emerges through direct interaction with material – through touch, shaping and movement. As air passes through the structures of ceramic objects, they produce sound and reveal the acoustic properties of the material itself. Here, ceramics functions both as a sculptural form and as an instrument whose sound depends on physical action. Air and movement come together in a tactile experience, where sound becomes inseparable from the interaction between the body and material.
Alessandro Perini is an Italian composer and multimedia artist who explores the interaction between acoustic instruments, electronics and mechanical systems he constructs himself. In the work presented at the exhibition, synthetic low-frequency vibrations are transmitted through an electromechanical system and interact with water. Light makes it possible to observe the vibrations produced by sound and the changes on the water’s surface. The otherwise invisible vibrations become visible, revealing sound as a process that brings together technology, light and matter in motion.
Arturas Bumšteinas (b. 1982) received a master’s degree in composition from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. The artist has held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions and festivals in Europe and the USA. In 2013, he received the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) “Palma Ars Acustica” award. In 2019, he was awarded the Borisas Dauguvietis Earring for integrating sound experiments into new forms of theatre, and in 2021, he received the “Golden Stage Cross” for best music for theatre productions.
Elena Laurinavičiūtė (b. 1993) graduated with a master’s degree in ceramics from the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2024. The artist creates ceramic objects and participates in performances, solo and group exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. Between 2023 and 2025, she received an award from the Lithuanian Artists’ Association, the “JCDecaux” Audience Award and a visual arts scholarship from the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
Alessandro Perini (b. 1983) studied composition, electronic music and music communication in Italy and Sweden. His works have been presented at international festivals and cultural events, including the Venice Biennale, “Milano Musica” and the “MATA” festival in New York. Perini is also the founder of the curatorial collective “Hertzbreakerz”, participates in international artist residencies and teaches composition in Italy.
The exhibition “Acoustic Density” will be on view at (AV17) Gallery, Totorių St. 5, Vilnius, until November 26.
